The Davis County South Branch is being transformed. In the meantime, the community still has a place to be.

While the Davis County Bountiful Branch undergoes its transformation, the community it serves still needs somewhere to read, to study, to bring their children on a Tuesday afternoon. The Twig is that place. Carved out of an empty retail shell in a Bountiful strip mall, it’s a temporary library in the most generous sense of the word. Though modest in footprint, it’s able to meet as many needs as possible in its small space.

The name earns its meaning. A twig is not the tree, but it is of the tree, a living offshoot that carries the same DNA, bends in the same wind, reaches toward the same light. The Twig is not the South Branch, but it is unmistakably its kin. A space that was once slatwall, bare carpet, and fluorescent light was transformed in record time. Wood shelving lines the floor, seating clusters invite lingering, children's tables anchor a corner that feels like it was always meant for small hands and open books.

Designing a space that has no pretensions feels clarifying. The Twig didn't need to be iconic; it needed to work. It needed to provide a comfortable space for the librarians who staff it and the regulars who make the short drive from their usual branch. That clarity of purpose shaped every decision. And in that way, The Twig is not so different from the project it stands in for. Both ask the same question: what does this community actually need? Both are trying, in their different scales and timelines, to answer it well.
