A historic building on 200 South that had stopped telling people where its front door was.

The Axis Building has stood on 200 South since 1909. Four floors of red brick, exposed steel beams inside, with a garden level tucked below the street, the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and carries a lot of Salt Lake City history.

A 1980 renovation gave the building the entrance it carried for the past forty years, and by the time we got there, that entrance had gone quiet. Somebody walking down 200 South could pass the front door without knowing it was one. The building owners asked us to give the building a grand entrance once again.

The complication was that the entry is a roof. People work directly underneath it at the garden level, so before we could think about how the entrance looked, we had to be sure it would keep water out of the rooms below. That work took most of the budget and none of it is visible. The planter beds that had sat empty for years came out and stayed out.

Above that, the moves were small. The walk comes up to meet the city sidewalk so the two read as one surface. We created softer ground underfoot, and the light kept low and close to the path. We kept the railing and the skylight and repainted what we kept.

None of it moved quickly. Early pricing came back well past what the project could carry, so we spent a spring walking the site with PDQ Builds and redrawing until the scope fit what the entrance actually needed. That slow stretch made the entire thing possible. The Axis Building has been here a long time, and it can finally provide visitors with a proper welcome.
