Walker Terrace Bar and Retail Concepts

Walker Terrace Bar and Retail Concepts

Walker Terrace Bar and Retail Concepts
Good design has a way of making vacant space feel inevitable.
Ground-floor commercial space in a downtown parking garage is easy to overlook. Walker Terrace is a case for why that's a mistake. Our team was brought in to develop a series of design concepts for two vacant retail spaces at the base of the Walker Center parking structure in downtown Salt Lake City, with the goal of helping prospective tenants and investors see what the space could become. The result was a retail concept and a restaurant and bar concept, each developed in enough detail to feel genuinely inhabitable, and each rendered to bring that potential to life as a marketing tool for the property.
The retail concept leans into the particular qualities of the space itself. The exposed coffered concrete ceiling is left visible grounding the design in something honest and structural while warm wood shelving, terrazzo display counters, and sculptural pendant lights layer in richness above the polished concrete floor.
The bar and restaurant occupies a darker, more atmospheric register. A dramatic chandelier of clustered warm lights anchors the ceiling above the bar, which is backed floor to ceiling with illuminated shelving.
Slatted wood detailing, deep tones, and generous planting soften the industrial bones of the space into something that feels settled and alive. It is the kind of room that looks good at any hour, but best after dark.
Together the two concepts make an argument for the block. Detailed enough to serve as genuine design proposals, and compelling enough to function as marketing material, they gave the client something to show prospective tenants that was more persuasive than square footage and a floor plan.
