An updated office space inside a historic building, blending innovation with the space's natural charm.

In a past life, the historic Salt Lake Hardware Building was at the center of commerce in the city. Located next to the North Temple railroad station, just north of a Union Pacific depot, when the warehouse building was first constructed in 1909 it was in the most convenient spot in the American West to participate in trade. At present, the building continues to sit at the threshold of exchange between Utah and the rest of the world: adjacent to the still-functioning railroad, and at a perfect vantage point to watch planes fly in and out of the nearby international airport, the historic building has outlived others of its era and was in need of major repurposing to match the surrounding flow of energy.

In our approach to this project, research formed the bedrock of our design process in both historical and technical aspects.

Our team delved into the building's rich history, familiarizing ourselves with the many nooks and crannies, ensuring that our design decisions would be informed and rooted in a deep understanding of the space. By doing so, we aimed to accentuate the natural character of the building and blend new construction with centuries old charm.

The exposed blonde brick walls, complemented by the raw wood of the ceiling and columns, exuded a timeless style that we were eager to preserve and utilize. Drawing inspiration from these existing elements, our new design interventions often referenced the linear quality of the materials. Updated slatted wood features and sleek black steel finishes enhanced the industrial ambiance without overshadowing the inherent charm of the space.

Lines were also highlighted in select furniture choices, like the barstools throughout the break room. Thin rings form an eye-catching lighting focal point in the lobby, a modernist piece posing a striking contrast as seen against the backdrop of the wood clerestories. In the breakroom and conference rooms, lighting was thoughtfully designed to highlight and provide interest into the overall aesthetics, subtly augmenting the atmosphere without drawing undue attention.
