Our newly unveiled lobby welcomes guests and tenants into one of the most historic buildings in Salt Lake City. Its small size allowed us to dive into the details, giving thought to each minor choice in order to best decide whether to preserve, update, or redesign.

The historic McIntyre building was designed by architect Richard Kletting in 1908. Kletting had a large impact on the cityscape, responsible for designing the Utah State Capitol, the original Salt Palace and Saltair, and various University of Utah buildings. He also contributed to the design of iconic buildings across Europe, like Paris’ Sacre Coeur and Le Bon Marché. His accomplished design eye is on display in the McIntyre Building, which is Utah’s first skyscraper.

Our aim with this lobby redesign was to update with context in mind. We began with an extended research process, learning everything we could know about the many lifetimes of the building. From that informed position, we were able to identify which elements of the lobby were essential to its historic spirit, and which would be best to rework.

The wood parquet floors were refinished, highlighting a natural patina that serves as a perfect foundation for the rest of the room. An existing mirror wall was a highlight of the original space, and in order to enhance its presence, we removed the wainscoting below it to allow the mirrored surface to extend across the back wall.

To visually connect with the mirror wall, we refinished the ceiling in reflective white lacquer. This surface reflects the light from the new chandeliers, creating a radiant glow that fills the room. For the north and south walls we painted the wainscoting in order to draw more attention to the original marble panels.

Some added elements were built from scratch and tailored to their exact locations. A custom bench was built from green leather and a steel finish, reflecting the traditional aesthetics and drawing focus to the premium materials. Stretching across an empty wall, and visually continuing into the added space created by the mirror wall, is an oversized piece of custom art in the style of American abstract expressionists from the early 20th century.
