We love working on projects where we get the opportunity to reimagine utilitarian structures into something unique. Walker Center parking garage, a high-traffic parking structure in downtown Salt Lake City, is connected to the iconic Walker Center and sits at the south end of recently revamped Regent Street. Approaching the task of assessing the aging structure and coming up with low-cost solutions to make a big impact, we designed interior and exterior paint and vinyl schemes that made the space into a vibrant, functional, and visually striking piece of the block.

The interior redesign centered on an intuitive wayfinding system, crucial for navigation within the multi-level structure. Our solution leveraged a palette of nine bright colors, each assigned to a different floor. This bold color-coding strategy not only differentiates the levels but also infuses the space with energy and personality. For the signage we used bold, oversized super graphics to act as both easy-to-follow directions as well as decorative elements. The larger-then-life numbers also combat the common problem of users forgetting which level their car is on.

For the exterior, we positioned the garage as a canvas for urban art, creating a minimalistic mural that engages with its surroundings. The street-facing extruded aluminum fins became the focal point of our design. We applied a geometric paint scheme to these fins, transforming the facade into a dynamic spectacle. The interplay of light, shadow, and perspective creates a sort of optical illusion – the appearance of the exterior shifts and evolves as viewers move, offering a dynamic visual experience from various angles and times of day.

As users pass the garage, they can also get a glimpse of the bold color scheme within. The overlap of our exterior and interior solutions not only elevates the aesthetic appeal of the structure but also contributes to the neighborhood, turning a functional building into a piece of public art. The depth created by the painted fins adds a layer of visual intrigue, breaking up the monotony often associated with parking structures and inviting passersby to engage with the architecture.
