The R1 Executive Suites are a reconfiguration of an upper level suite that Trent had designed previously while at another office. This project provided the opportunity to re-enter a space he already knew well, using a design process that emphasized usage to freshen, rethink, and renew the suite for its next phase.

As R1 updated all of their workspaces to welcome teams back to the office after prolonged work-from-home mandates, they saw a chance to examine their goals and the ways they were using their spaces in order to reach higher levels of comfort and efficiency. They made the decision to move their executives to Utah, and needed this sixth floor suite to be dedicated for executive use.

To accommodate the new users, we placed emphasis on programming, wayfinding, and usability in the suite. Working closely with R1, we compiled detailed lists of specifics for each workstation and meeting room. Taking note of exact amounts of storage space needed, desk configurations preferred, and existing office processes all allowed us to tailor the suite to the company’s specific needs and priorities.

Visually, we took cues from the rest of R1’s spaces to create something in line with the existing visual language. The company’s office suites across the country each feature their own individual flairs while connecting to shared visual themes, like natural wood tones, plants, and pops of color.

We used materials to elevate our functional workspace layouts. For the wood features, we opted for a rich, layered honey tone, which we then matched many of the furniture pieces to, bringing warmth into the suite. These features were paired with dark colors, like black marble, which anchors the space. We aimed to emphasize the natural characteristics of the materials we used, leaning in to a sense of authenticity and a connection to nature.

A focus on fundamentals led to an executive suite that is simultaneously elevated and familiar, functional and simple. Owing the gorgeous light and sprawling views to the space’s natural advantage on the sixth floor, we worked to highlight the existing strengths by perfecting the details.
