In 2019, as Salt Lake City prepared for the unfortunate demolition of the historic Pantages Theater, the Salt Lake City Redevelopment Agency enlisted our team to conduct a thorough assessment, documentation, and archival project.
The Pantages Theatre, under Alexander Pantages' vision, had evolved from a vaudeville circuit to a permanent fixture in Salt Lake City. Its opulent interiors, adorned with Greek and Roman Revival elements, was a monument to a bygone era of entertainment. However, with a tumultuous history marked by financial crises and legal battles, the once-grand theater was in disrepair, with many artifacts in danger of being destroyed and forgotten.
Our project began with an extensive documentation process. Utilizing various mediums such as video, photography, 3D scans, watercolors, and drawings, we captured artifacts throughout the building. The result was the creation of the Pantages Theater Archive, a rich collection offering a comprehensive view of this piece of Utah history. https://pta.lib.utah.edu/
Our mission for this project extended beyond documentation; we sought to democratize information and bring our community into our world of research. To support the preservation of the theater's legacy, we worked with the talented archivists at the University of Utah Marriott Library to establish a digital archive. This repository, accessible to the public through the library's website, is a historic treasure trove open to all. It invites users to explore historic decorative inspiration, delve into tales of a bygone Salt Lake City, and reflect on the lessons learned from the lifetime of an iconic gathering place on Main Street.
