Our first parking garage project, the Nearon 257 Tower parking renovation blended graphic and interiors to renew the sense of life in an aging parking garage. Being selective about where to preserve, paint, or completely renovate allowed us to work efficiently, bringing about a huge transformation from cave-like space to bright, comfortable garage.
The four level, fully underground garage serves 257 Tower, an office complex in downtown Salt Lake City. After many years of daily use it was looking dilapidated, dark, and unwelcoming. Our redesign needed to open up the space, ensuring its daily users felt safe and comfortable during their commute between car and office. The project took place as two pieces: the graphics and paint scheme, and the updated ceiling.
Our graphics team created a set of wayfinding signs that would work triple duty, becoming functional tools, visual interest, and a link to the 257 Tower’s branding. Simple forms were blown up to an unconventional scale, stretching across the walls as a sort of mural.
Each floor in the garage was assigned a different color to create separation. We settled on the primary colors and a true green as our four colors, as each one could be bright and welcoming on their own while looking cohesive and playful as a set. When guests first enter the garage they’re met with the bold “257 blue” that is prominent in the building’s branding, which ties the space to the tower and creates a personalized entrance.
The original lay-in grid ceiling was leaking and degrading, and the damp, dark spots scattered across it made the space look much older than it really was. We were confident that a full replacement would do wonders for the feeling of the garage, and by replacing the old one with an identical, brand new ceiling, we could restore it to its original look.
This project centered on the importance of atmosphere. By paying attention to the atmosphere within the 257 garage we were able to create a bright and welcoming space ushering users to and from their workdays.
